Languages United recently marked its 17th Birthday with a celebration that combined fun, community spirit, and a heartfelt commitment to a great cause. Each year, we rally together to support the charity "Breast Cancer Now." This year was no different. Our students and staff came together for a fundraising Wear it Pink Party that made our anniversary meaningful, not just for us but for the community we call home.
The Bake-Off Morning:
The festivities began with a delightful Bake-Off. Picture this: our students, all donned in various shades of pink, arrived at school carrying an array of delectable treats. Cakes, muffins, tarts, brownies, and cupcakes – all of these were lovingly prepared by our students and their host families the night before. But this wasn't just about baking; it was also a fantastic cultural and language immersion project involving our homestay families. From sourcing ingredients to baking with their hosts, our students from Switzerland relished every moment of this enriching experience.
Judging the Cakes:
Two brave souls, our Bake-Off judges, Jayne and Sanela, faced the enviable task of tasting approximately 30 different cakes. It was a tough job, but someone had to do it! The cake that stood out and earned the coveted Languages United "Paul Hollywood" handshake was a stunningly presented cheesecake. Each portion was elegantly sealed in charming, mini transparent bowls, adorned with pink bows and silver butterflies. It was almost too pretty to eat. Kudos to Lisa, our host, for her brilliant contribution to our fundraiser.
Selling Cakes for a Cause:
Following the Bake-Off, our students took on the role of enthusiastic salespeople. They sold their scrumptious creations to friends within their groups, teachers, and all Languages United staff. More importantly, they took the initiative to share these delectable goodies with our extensive group of Italian students. Donations flowed in quickly, and our cakes were selling like, well, hotcakes!
Karaoke Fundraiser:
The fundraising continued with a spirited Karaoke session that involved around 100 students. Here's the twist: you could sing in English for free, but if you preferred a song in a foreign language, a £5 donation was required. The response was overwhelming, and the stage was graced with a medley of songs, not only in English but also in Italian, Spanish, and German.
Fundraising Totals:
As we approach the end of the month, we're still tallying up the funds raised. The generosity of our community has been inspiring, and we can't wait to announce the final figure.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, Languages United's 17th Birthday celebration was more than just a milestone. It was a beautiful blend of joy, culture, and community support. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our homestay families, dedicated students, and our exceptional team. Here's to many more happy years of supporting both our international and local communities. Happy 17th Birthday, Languages United!
