Cork English College welcomed the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy to the school for a very special guest lecture & International Food and Culture Day. Corks "First Citizen" Lord Mayor McCarthy is a historian by trade and was invited to deliver a guest lecture on the history of Cork to CEC’s current General English + Irish Culture participants from universities in Hungary & Poland.
The guest lecture focused on the history of Cork City including the early foundations of the city, how Cork grew to be a key European trading port & even the origins of the “Rebel City & County” nickname.
Following the lecture, Lord Mayor McCarthy joined the school's International Food & Culture Day and met with students from France, Spain, Japan, Brazil, Benin, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Mexico, Northern Cyprus, & Costa Rica. There was an array of sweets, treats & savory delicacies from around the world on display such as Mexican guacamole, miso-flavoured potatoes from Japan, Benin-style peanuts and much more!
Speaking on the event Sonny Kennedy of CEC had this to say; “It was a pleasure to host the Lord Mayor in CEC. Our Irish Culture Erasmus+ participants found the lecture really enthralling, it was very much in line with the delivery of our Erasmus+ programmes which focus on personal development, continual learning & cultural sharing. Lord Mayor McCarthy serves on a number of cross-EU committees and very much understands & appreciates cultural connectivity, something which our International Food & Culture Day showcased today.”
